Success Stories

"Fallon" -- adopted December 2009

Fallon is a beautiful, petite, rough-coated red and white Border Collie girl. She is approx. 2 years old, spayed & current on vaccinations. She was originally picked up as a stray puppy (about 6-8 mths old) by a Kansas shelter. She was totally ‘shut down’ and terrified, so they moved her into a foster home; within a few days, she had two pups that she didn’t know what to do with, and they didn’t survive. She was then sent to another foster home where she lived for about 9 mths. Her foster ‘mom’ loved her and did her best to bring Fallon out of the shell she had encased herself in, and made great strides in getting her to accept affection and petting from people, and to move willingly around the house rather than just huddle in a corner.

The more Fallon came out of her shell, the more her foster family realized that she had some obsessive-compulsive issues. She would ‘air snap’ at imaginary things in the air, in her food/water bowls, at shadows. She would also pounce and dig voraciously in the yard, trying to get to something that wasn’t there. They started her on Clomicalm, and sought more experienced help at that point (the shelter would euthanize her if she were sent back there). They contacted us as Fallon’s last ditch effort, and we just had to give this pretty little girl a chance.

She has been with us since August, 2007 and has made huge strides in her rehabilitation. Her compulsive behaviors are definitely her way of dealing with/alleviating stress and anxiety, but given time & lots of confidence-building, Fallon has learned to not get so worked up over the changes in her life. Over the last few months, she has learned crate training, housebreaking and to accept attention from strangers without fear or anxiety. She will still dig if left outside unsupervised (and I swear can dig a 6’ deep crater in 5 minutes or less!), but only if left alone.

Fallon will need to stay on Clomicalm for the rest of her life to help manage her anxiety, but it is relatively inexpensive and she takes it easily. She would also do best in a home without other dogs as she really isn’t comfortable around most other dogs, though tolerates cats just fine. She is a sweet, sweet girl looking for a home that will continue to work at building her confidence and appreciating her for the little lovebug that she is!

Fallon is fostered in a loving home in Glenrock, WY.
